How to Style Velvet

Personally I as a fan of style icons like Stevie Nicks love experimenting with all different types of fabrics and textures in clothing. By far one of my favorite fabrics to wear is velvet. I own velvet leggings, velvet pants, velvet crop tops, dresses, and even a vintage black velvet cardigan. I have found bringing this subtle texture into an outfit can really make it pop without making it to over the top. I personally own black velvet leggings which I tend to wear a lot more instead of my plain black ones especially in the winter because they give extra warmth. So pretty much what I am saying is velvet styles itself its an amazing texture to bring into your wardrobe especially in the winter because it is warm and also sensible. The only bad thing about this small fashion tip is the amount of lint can get out of hand especially when worn with thicker fuzzier sweaters however investing in a lint roller is a totally worthwhile investment because of the enhancement velvet can bring to your overall outfits.

Photoshoot in the Woods

Me and my best friends took an adventure into the rather sketchy woods near our house for a mock photoshoot (note to self: I am the least photogenic person on the planet)...

(All pictures taken on a cannon rebel)

had some falls along the way

Yes my best friends mom was a super model thats why she is so tall and beautiful its in her genes

wearing brand new white chucks into the woods was a bad idea

For this we chose to wear fall inspired outfits Estelle wore cream colored vans with a light wash pair of skinny genes rolled up and an oatmeal colored cropped sweater.

I wore red corduroy shorts an oatmeal and white lace sweater with white high top converse (my signature shoes) and a gold Kate Spade necklace.

Visiting Seventeen Magazine

Hey everyone!
This Friday, I was granted the amazing opportunity to visit the headquarters of Seventeen magazine.  Naturally, I jumped at the chance. I walked from Grand Central to the Hearst Tower in New York City for the occasion. The trek was well worth it.
Some of you may wonder: what’s so special about this random kid that she was invited to visit Seventeen's main office. Well, I wasn't invited myself. My sister, Mary Cain, is a runner and (coincidentally) seventeen years old. She'll be attending the World Championships in Moscow later this summer. The lovely people at Seventeen allowed her to bring along guests.
Me and my sisters! You can even kind of see the
big framed magazine covers in the office.
So, Mary chose our older sister Áine (who is an editor for her college newspaper, the Flat Hat) and me (because I just started this blog and I want to work in the fashion industry) to come with her. When we arrived, we met up with a really nice journalist who interviewed my sister. She showed us around a little. We even saw some of the cool clothes they were going to use for a fashion shoot!
Once the interview was over, the journalist showed us Seventeen's beauty closet. That's where they keep all of their hair and makeup products. She gave us a whole entire box of the O.P.I nail polish in Color #17.
The experience I had visiting Seventeen magazine was amazing. The people were so nice and friendly and I got to spend time with my sisters in the city on a sunny day. Overall, it was a really great learning experience and lots of fun.

Athletic Styling

Hey everybody!
This is my sister Mary!
So, this my sister Mary (Cain) she is a professional runner. This year, she made the World team. Some time in August, she’ll be heading for Moscow. I’m so excited for her! However, this experience may present a fashion dilemma. The American athletes can only wear Nike clothing (it’s the brand that’s sponsoring the team).
Luckily, this is a brand with quality outfits and a great selection. Nike generously sends athletes humungous boxes of free clothes.
Her hair bow
When my sister received the box of clothes, I helped her put together some outfits to wear (even when she’s running around, I want her to look her best).
I also wove her a red white and blue bow (hair bows are sort of her signature look). I had to force her to let me do her makeup. She’s an athlete, so lots of thick mascara and powder aren’t an option. I wanted to go for a light application that she won’t sweat off.
This is what I came up with!
Her makeup was just some BB cream powder and waterproof mascara

Guide to Lipstick

Every girl that applies makeup everyday knows that your look simply is not complete with out your lipstick. Even though this maybe true most teenaged girls and many adults too go through life never thinking to apply lipstick unless necessary . And without a guide on how to appropriately wear lipstick it can be scary. Not knowing balance out you makeup you may end up saddening prom and wedding pictures for years to come in which you wrongly applied a combo like smokey eye and a red lip.

The first thing a girl needs to know about when it comes to picking out lipstick is their undertone of their skin. You fit into one of three categories: cool (pink, red or bluish undertones), warm (yellow, peachy, golden undertones), or neutral (a mix of warm and cool undertones). A way to find the undertone in your skin is to look at the back of your wrist where your veins are if they are blue you have a cool undertone if they are green you have a warm undertone (neutral is a mix of both). If you still can't figure it out take your jewelry and see which suits you better silver or gold. If silver looks good then you probably have a cool undertone and if gold looks better you probably have warm undertones. Now after that rant you are wondering... What does that have anything to do with lipstick? The lipstick that looks best on you is determined by your undertone. And even the same color lipsticks look very different depending on their undertone.

Mac warm undertone (lip stick shade Lady Danger)
Mac cool undertone (lipstick Viva Glam I)
Now Some lipsticks thankfully come with undertones listed or when in a higher end store like Sephora or Mac you can ask for assistance in finding the lipstick with the right undertone. However, where most people will start off is in a drugstore the best tip to finding the right undertone is trying to determine if your lipstick has an orange base (meaning its warm) or if it has a blue base (if its cool). This is not as hard to spot as it seems in the pictures above it is very clear to see this characteristic of the lipsticks.

Another thing too watch out for when using lipstick is how it balances out with the rest of your makeup. This will come easy to someone who applies extremely neutral eye looks or maybe just a little bit of eye liner and mascara. This will allow you to apply any color lipstick to match the eye because it doesn't come across as too much and your lips can be the focus of your makeup. But for someone who does a more intense eye on a regular basis I believe it is best to keep a more nude or neutral lip for your skin tone. Again this is to balance your face accept leaving your eyes the focus. Now some of you may ask what a nude shade is. This is a shade that almost perfectly matches your lips but still enhances their overall appearance. These shades will also have undertones and the same rules apply with nudes like with a brighter lip color.

Now on the topic of the finish of a lipstick... There isn't much to say it's mostly based on personal preference. There are too many lipstick finishes to even list. Some lipsticks are matte and some are glossy. Some come with a glitter or a sheen to them. You can't really go wrong choosing a finish and its all based on what fits with your style.

Now that you know all the basics of lipsticks enjoy your new and improved pout!

P.S boys don't like when you kiss them while wearing lipstick
